It is not known what it does among the people and its name is not properly said, biochemistry, is considered the profession of the future mixed with biomedical engineering, but there is only one assignment in our country.
In short, bioengineering is the application of engineering principles to the life sciences. I think the definition comes from the name and the Berkeley University Bioengineering Department has explained it quite well with the slogan .” The future of biology. The future of engineering. ”
It is a multidisciplinary field that covers many branches of science such as biotechnology.
5 LESSONS I LEARNED IN THE CHAPTER
1- Research the department on the basis of the university
My advice to those who will prefer bioengineering is to go to the page of the department they want to choose and most importantly to look at the work areas of the academicians. Since bioengineering is a multidisciplinary field, its content can change from school to school and even varies from school to school. For example; the Engineering faculty in Marmara, and the chemistry-metallurgy faculty at Yıldız Technical University. While he is affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Üsküdar University and Istanbul Civilization University, he is affiliated with the Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences at Abdullah Gül University.
Bioengineering departments in universities
2-Prefer the department whose education language is English
I didn't get a good English education until university. I knew that I wouldn't be able to learn if I didn't make it mandatory for myself, so I wrote almost all of my choices in departments whose language of instruction was 100% English. It was definitely the best decision I've taken. I think bioengineering is a department that should be read in 100% English.
- Current articles are in English,
- There is a difference between the technical language and the language we use daily,
- Studying part of it in English has a positive effect in many areas (Erasmus, internship opportunities abroad, overseas master's and doctorate, etc.),
- Having a variety of English content on online course platforms.
3-Start regularly
I started the department as an irregular student, that is, I started the department in the second semester of the first year. I mean too much because I want to graduate in the year I should graduate. I took 10 courses in the first semester of the second year. It's such a hassle. Also, since there are connected courses, it creates a bit of trouble on this side. Somehow set it up and start regularly.
4- It is not possible to become an engineer just by taking the course.
Be sure to register and follow the school clubs and department clubs. While I was studying, I was a member of many clubs, including my department club, and took an active role. This perspective really added a lot of value to me. With this perspective, I started chasing things. I got to know my profession closely with the technical trips we went on, I learned about biotechnology and other startups in this way, and every person I listened to has definitely added something to me. I can give two advice on this subject;
1. Watch online courses and learn new things in every gap
2. Follow not only the activities in your own school but also the clubs and activities at other universities. While I was preparing, I was very school-based. I wouldn't do the same if I came back now.
5-Academic Success is Important
I am a person who attaches importance to his social life, has a monkey appetite, and is easily distracted. Therefore, when I finished my first year in the department, I could not achieve the academic success I wanted. This had little effect on my perspective when I started. In the beginning, I had plans to improve myself and work as soon as I finished it. I'm thinking of doing a bachelor's degree. Apart from this, we see the grade point average in many places (internship, Erasmus, scholarship applications, master's..) Find something to motivate yourself academically, even start the department that way.
